Wallpaper Should It Stay or Go?

Wallpaper Should It Stay or Go

Hello, and welcome to Don’s corner. I’ve been in the Real Estate game for over 40 years, I’ve seen the trends come and go, then come back. I hope you enjoy and find my articles/experiences helpful.

Welcome everyone to my corner; today’s topic is Décor trends. The circle of trends tends to always circle back around. In case you haven’t noticed Wallpaper has made a return with vengeance; and it is here to stay.

Taking a walk down memory lane; wallpaper dates to the 15th century when its function was to decorate the inside of cupboards, and smaller rooms in the homes of merchants not the homes of the aristocrats as one may assume. Fast forward to the 20th century, this fancy paper was being used everywhere bathrooms, hallways, kitchens, bedrooms anywhere there was a place it was hung. This décor was in the wealthiest of homes to the poorest a social designation was not a factor. Many will recall the 70s, wallpaper was a signature staple of the time. In the early 2000’s it became “dated”. Those designers decided to start painting bold, vs papering a wall. I recall the wallpaper table with the water, paste, slime, and the trail of water and paste dipping to the wall to hang.

Fast forward to today, interior design choices. Guess what is back with vengeance… WALLPAPER! So, if you’re looking to give your home a Lil’ boost in appearance, here is one of many design options. The “do’s & don’ts of wallpapering.

The Do’s & Don’ts:

Do use wallpaper on an accent wall

Don’t mix patterns within the same area

Do use wallpaper in spaces you wish to bring in texture, & color

Don’t place big prints in small spaces, like bathrooms

Do Blend inspirational wall color with wallpaper to make a cohesive look

Don’t overlook an opportunity to use wallpaper in a creative way i.e., ceilings

Do use wallpapers with heavy textures

Don’t be afraid to go bold and make an inspirational statement or focal point

Do use wallpaper to elongate a space or add the illusion of height

Don’t think that wallpaper must bring an element of color or pattern, it can also bring a sense of calm & neutrality to spaces as well.

If you’re seeking an inexpensive way to spruce up your living space, wallpaper is a great option. This is a versatile and fun expression to use. For you “do it yourself people”, this will leave you with a feeling of accomplishment when you see the final product.

Happy papering.

-Love Don
